Less peaceful than we anticipate
“But Jesus was all about peace”… is this true? No –
49″I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
Getting rid of religion will not rid the world of the lust for power, greed and other conflict-causing traits.
1. No peace vv49-53
v50 – n.b. Jesus has already been baptised by John. This is referring to a later baptism.
Confrontation is inevitable this side of judgement take.
cf. v14 in ch 13 – ppl indignant.
2. Can’t you see? vv54-56
When will the end come?
Ppl generally aren’t v.good at reading the signs of the ages.
Ppl of Jesus’ time thought they knew who he was – but they didn’t.
3. So get sorted vv57-59
Since judgment day is upon us, we need to get wored with the judge.
N.b. no discussion of guilt or innocence. Jesus assumes that we are guilty before God. We progress directly from court appearance to sentencing.
